The following is a short story written by a 7 year old Zahra and illustrated by her a 9 year old brother Zayd.

“Wake up Tommy” whispered Tommy’s mum. Tommy’s mum gently tapped Tommy. Tommy rose up, stretched his hands and let out a huge yawn. “It’s 8:00 O clock in the morning. Time to get ready for school Tommy” said Tommy’s mum with a smile. “School! what’s a school” asked Tommy. “

“Well a school is a place where you learn” replied Tommy’s mum. “That’s boring” moaned Tommy. “I’d rather stay home and play with the baby”. “Well Tommy, first you have to try out school. Then you can decide if it’s boring or not” replied Tommy’s mum.

“School is boring and I have been to school” demanded Tommy. “No, you haven’t” replied Tommy’s mum. “It’s only your first time”. “But school is boring” demanded Tommy. “Anyways lets get dressed” replied Tommy’s mum.

So Tommy took a bath with his baby, wore his clean blue clothes and sprinted downstairs. Tommy went to the kitchen and saw his mum. Tommy walked towards the dining table and sat patiently on his chair. Tommy’s mum put Tommy a bowl from the cupboard. She took out a box of cereal. Tommy’s mum poured some cereal into Tommy’s bowl. Tommy’s mum also poured some milk into Tommy’s bowl.

She mixed a spoon of honey into Tommy’s bowl. Tommy gobbled his breakfast and gulped his apple juice. They quickly took the baby. Then Tommy went outside following his mum. They both jumped into their shiny blue car and zoomed off. After 5 minutes they arrived at school. Tommy and his mum got out of their car. Took the baby and closed the car doors. <end of page 5>

Tommy’s mum knocked on the school door. After 10 seconds the teacher opened the door. Tommy was so nervous that he did not want to step in.But the teacher looked at Tommy and flashed a warm smile. “My name is Sarah, come in” said the teacher in a soft voice. “Well, well can mummy come to school and teach me” asked Tommy.

“No” replied Tommy’s mum. “If that’s the case I am not going to school today” groaned Tommy. “Fine, I will come and watch you replied” Tommy’s mum.

So Tommy and his mum walked to the classroom. Tommy’s mum sat down on the chair while Tommy drew a picture. “What’s your name?” asked Sarah. “Tommy” replied Tommy. < end of page 8>

Tommy got off his chair he sat on when he was drawing. Then he went sat on the lego mat and played with lego. After that it was art’s time and Tommy made a spider puppet. Next it was break time. Tommy and the other kids ate fruits and drank juice. <end of page 9>

Then it was music time. Tommy played with a rattle. Tommy also learnt a lot of songs. “This is so fun” Tommy exclaimed. Tommy had forgotten about what he said before. <end of page 10>

At last it is outdoor play time. Tommy went on the swing, in the sandpit and in the slide. He also spoke to other spiders. The he waved goodbye to the teacher and drove home with his mum. Tommy was sad. When they arrived home, Tommy and his mum had a chat. <end of page 11>

“See I told you” exclaimed Tommy’s mum. “Told me what” asked Tommy. “Told you school is fun” replied Tommy’s mum. “Sorry mum, I didn’t mean this” replied Tommy. “That’s fine Tommy, but next time first try something, then you can decide if it is good or not”. <end of page 12>

“Sure” replied Tommy. Tommy’s dad came back from the office and Tommy told his dad about what he did in school.
